Change default visibility for all events in Google Calendar

When you are sharing a google calendar and google reads your gmail and finds trips/airline tickets/... and adds those events to your calendar, it defaults visibility to 'only you'

To change it (I chose default visibility) follow steps below:

Change the default visibility of all events

Important:

If your calendar is public and events from Gmail are set to "Calendar default,” all Gmail events are visible.
To find who has access to your calendar, check your sharing settings.

On your computer, open Google Calendar.
At the top right, click Settings menu Settings.
On the left, click Google Workspace smart features.
Under "Show events from Gmail," click Privacy of email events.
Select a visibility setting:
- Calendar default
- Private
- Only me
In the pop-up, select whether to apply the visibility to new events or all events.

For future buyers, this is the process I used as my Linear LDCO801 garage door opener had a 'Learn' button:

* Removed battery cover from the remote.

* Press and hold the small black program button in the remote until the remote status LED turns solid blue

* On the garage door opener I pressed the 'Learn' button once (the garage door opener did some light blinking)

* On the remote, press the remote's numbered button that you want associated with the door once (and the garage door opener did the some light blinking.

* Press once but do not hold the remote's small black program button and the remote blue LED turns off (I believe saving the setting).

* Test opening and closing the garage door with your new remote.

* Replace battery cover

go to the 3 dots upper right corner

then go to settings

then in the search box type 'notifications'

Enable Developer Mode on Firestick

To enable Developer Mode on your Amazon Firestick, follow these steps as described on KinkeadTech.com:

Navigate to Settings: Go to the Settings menu on your Firestick.
Select My Fire TV: From the Settings menu, select "My Fire TV.”
Go to About: Within "My Fire TV,” select "About.”
Activate Developer Mode: Click on the name of your Fire TV device (e.g., Fire TV Stick) seven times in rapid succession. A notification will appear saying "No need, you are already a developer.”
Access Developer Options: Once you’ve completed the above steps, Developer Options will be available in the Settings menu under "My Fire TV.”

These steps should enable Developer Mode on your Firestick, allowing you to install apps from unknown sources and use ADB debugging.

How to Prevent Fire TV Stick from Going to Sleep

It was very annoying that the firestick would timeout and disconnect from the tv when we put a show on hold and stopped to eat dinner or ... It appears that the timeout was set to 20 minutes.

There is no menu accessible setting in firestick. After researching, came across this page

and had to go with the manual method using ADB Shell and type commands and I originally set both to 2 hours (7,200,000 milliseconds)

I don't quite understand the screen_off_timeout.

Please note to get the 'developer menu' on the firestick took a trick to access. I'll try to put that in another post.

The secure_sleep_timeout is to prevent your firestick from going to sleep

To enable developer options on your Amazon Fire TV, open the Settings Menu, and navigate to My Fire TV > About. Select your device's name 7 times, until you see "No Need, You Are Already a Developer." The Developer Options menu will then be accessible in your Settings.

Also when you first connect via ADBLINK, you will need to approve the connection on the TV

Frustrated with your Fire Stick going to sleep and closing your apps all the time? There’s a fix, and I’ll show you how to do it.

The Problem with my Fire Stick Going to Sleep

If you use an Amazon Fire TV Stick, Cube, or anything with Amazon’s Fire TV OS, you may have noticed that there is no setting to disable the device from going to sleep after some time of inactivity.

If you use Kodi on the Fire TV device, then you have probably been frustrated by the fact that every time you wake the device, Kodi has been forcefully closed and it’s back on the Fire TV home screen.

Not only is that frustrating because you have to wait for Kodi to boot up each time, but it can wreak havoc on your Kodi add-ons since many add-ons lose all their settings if you don’t exit Kodi properly. The new Seren Kodi add-on suffers from this problem.

To solve this issue, you can:

Use adbLink to change an invisible setting to disable the screen timeout, OR
Install an app that will keep the screen alive to prevent the Fire Stick from sleeping.

I figured out #2 by myself, but later discovered #1 which is clearly the better choice because if your Fire Stick reboots, you don’t have to remember to launch the app again.

Either way, there are a couple things you’ll need to do first. You’ll need to enable ADB Debugging and install adbLink regardless of which method you choose.

Enable ADB Debugging on Your Fire TV Stick

Before you move on to one of the 2 methods below, you need to follow these steps first on your Fire Stick.

On your Fire TV device, navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options and turn ON both options (Apps from Unknown Sources and ADB Debugging).
When connecting from ADB for the first time, the Fire TV Stick shows a secure connection screen and you have to check a box to confirm that it’s OK to connect to your PC. There’s also a box to remember this choice.
Find and take note of your Fire Stick’s IP address by going to Settings > System > About > Network.

Download adbLink on Your Computer

Then, you will need to download adbLink to your computer before you move on to one of the 2 methods.

Using your desktop or laptop computer, go to this link, scroll down, and find the download link for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux). Download it and install it.

Then, follow this setup process to get your adbLink program communicating with your Fire TV Stick:

Open adbLink on your computer.
Click the New button
In Description, give your Fire TV Stick a name.
In Address, type the IP address of your Fire TV Stick that you took note of earlier.
Click the Save button.
Click the Connect button
You should see your Fire TV Stick’s IP or name show in the Connected Devices box, and you should see the text "IP connection” in the Connection Status box.
If so, you’re ready to go.

Note: If you’re having trouble connecting when you’ve done this before, try toggling ADB Debugging off and on again following the steps from the previous section.

Now, you’re ready to try one of the methods. Method #1 is better, so do that first. If you have any trouble with it, you could try method #2.

Method #1A – Change Sleep/Screensaver Settings via adbLink Utility

I just discovered new method that’s the easiest. It does exactly the same thing as the next method #1B, but instead of having to type in the commands in the ADB shell, you can simply use this utility in adbLink that takes care of commands for your.

Once you have your adbLink connected to your Fire Stick, select (adbLink 5.0) From the adbLink menu bar select "Utility->Set timers” or… (adbLink 5.1 and newer) Click the "Edit Timers” button.

A new window will pop up that looks like this…

All you need to do is select "Sleep Off” and optionally "Screensaver off” and click the "OK” button.

Method #1B – Change Sleep/Screensaver Settings via adbLink Command Line Shell

If method #1A didn’t work or you just want to learn what’s happening behind the scenes, read on. This method has worked for thousands of people.

While the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick allow you to select from never, 5, 10, or 15 minutes for the screensaver timer, there is nowhere in the device’s settings to change the sleep timer. That’s set to 20 minutes regardless of how the screensaver is configured. Even though it’s not in the interface, it’s actually possible to set a custom sleep timer, a custom screensaver timer, or disable them altogether. This guide will show you how.

The numeric values you use in this guide are in milliseconds. If you select "never” from the Fire TV’s screensaver settings, the screensaver timer gets set to 2147460000, which is about 24 days. Setting a value of 0 does not disable the screensaver but it does seem to work to disable the sleep timer, however it may be better to just use a very large value like Amazon does to disable the screensaver.

The sleep timer starts counting immediately after the device goes idle, not from when the screensaver starts. So setting a 5 minute screensaver timer and a 10 minute sleep timer will result in the device going to sleep 5 minutes after the screensaver starts.

Once your adbLink is connected to your Fire TV Stick (from the previous section), then click the "ADB Shell” button to open a command line shell.

Tip: If you are using a Mac and happen to get the error that says "Error Creating Command File”, the solution is to close adbLink, move the program file to your desktop and open it there. Then, you should be able to open the ADB shell without the error.

How to Run ADB Shell Commands

Copy the commands below, and then simply right-click in the ADB Shell window to paste. Or, you can just type it in. Hit the enter key to run the command.

Get Current Screensaver and Sleep Timeout Settings

settings get system screen_off_timeout

The default screensaver value is 300000, which is 5 minutes. My screensaver setting in FireOS settings was set to "Never”, so this setting value was set to 2147460000, which is about 24 days.

settings get secure sleep_timeout

The default sleep value is 1200000, which is 20 minutes. This is the setting that you can’t change in FireOS settings. But, you can here! Read on…

Save New Settings for Screensaver and Sleep Timeout

settings put system screen_off_timeout 2147460000

Running this command will disable your screensaver if it isn’t already. You could also do this in the FireOS settings, but this also gives you the ability to select an amount of time which is not available in the settings drop-down.

settings put secure sleep_timeout 0

Running this command will stop your Fire TV Stick from going to sleep by itself. The value "0” here actually disables the sleep timeout feature.

When you’re done, you can run the "get” commands from above once again to make sure the setting took properly.

Method #2 – Disable Fire Stick Sleep Timeout Using a Side-loaded App

If you got method #1 working, you can stop here. This is only an alternative method in case you can’t get method #1 to work.

This method involves installing an app on the Fire TV device that will disable the sleep timer. Since there are not any good apps in the Amazon App Store to accomplish this, you’ll need to download one from the Google Play Store in APK format and side-load it onto your Fire Stick or other Fire OS device.

Download the Stay Alive App from APK Downloader

Go to this link and click on the green button that says "Click here to download com.synetics.stay.alive”.

Side-load the Stay Alive App using adbLink on your Computer

Open adbLink on your computer which you installed in one of the preparation steps earlier.
Then click the Install APK button, navigate to the Stay Alive App APK file you downloaded earlier and select it.
You will see a popup asking if you really want to install the APK. Click Yes.
You should see a small progress bar in the bottom right corner of the screen letting you know it’s working. It could take a minute or two, so be patient.
When it’s done, you’ll see a popup that says Installed.
You should now see the Stay Live app in the Apps section of the Fire TV home screen.
Open it and activate the feature to keep the screen alive. Your Fire TV device should no longer go to sleep.

Notes About the Stay Alive App

I’ve seen some weird things with this app, and I’ve heard others report the same things.

The first time you select the app to open it, it appears as though nothing happens. I believe that first time is just a behind-the-scenes applying of the setting change. In order to open the interface of the app, select it a second time and it should come up.
With this app running, you will see an occasional toast message at the bottom of the screen saying "Google Play not installed”. It’s a minor annoyance, but the app still seems to work fine.

Ahhh… Much Better!

Now, when you turn on your TV to watch something on your Fire Stick, it will be in the same place where it was when you last turned off your TV. That means if you had Kodi open before, it will stay open, and it will be right where you left it.

Since you have configured the Power Plan settings already and you're still experiencing the issue, try disabling hibernation on Windows 10 by following the steps below and see if the issue will persist.

Press Windows key + X
Select Command Prompt (Admin) (or Terminal (Admin))
On the Command Prompt window, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off
Press Enter
Once done, close the Command Prompt window

How to fix Wi-Fi connection on Hp envy x360?

My HP envy 360 15-DS1xxx convertible PC suddenly had issues with no wifi. In device manager, it had a yellow caution and not operating.

The only thing that worked was updating the BIOS. I was on bios version F.11 and from HP site, I updated to F.14 (11/14/2023).

This could be a problem with the driver version. Please attach a screenshot of the device status, driver version, and hardware ids to help to identify what is causing the problem.

1-Right-click on Start then click on Device Manager
2-Click to expand the Network adapters
3-Right-click on the Wifi adapter and click on properties
4-Take a screenshot of the General and Driver tab
5-Click on the Details tab and change the property to "Hardware id"

My desktop pc has a 100 gb SSD and I was down to 7 GB which was causing problems with performance. I removed as many apps as possible and still not much margin.

Found a big 12 gb file called hiberfil.sys which is use for storing data to recover from hibernation. This is a desktop pc and I don't hibernate it.

I found this info on how to eliminate that file and gained 12 gb back (which was size to 40% of my memory of 32 gb)

In this post, we will show you how to increase or reduce the size of the hiberfil.sys file in Windows 11/10 using the powercfg command line. Hiberfil.sys file is a system file that is used by Windows to support Hibernation.

Windows supports hibernation by copying the contents of memory to disk. The system compresses memory contents before preserving them on the disk, which reduces the required disk space to less than the total amount of physical memory on the system.

If you find that the hiber.sys file is becoming too large and occupies disk space, you may want to consider reducing it. In Windows 11/10 now, the size of the hiber.sys file now is 40% of your RAM size by default. You cannot reduce it further. You can either disable Hibernation or change its size between 40% and 100% of your RAM size

To find out the syntax needed, in an elevated CMD type the following and hit Enter:

powercfg /hibernate /?

Change the size of hiberfil.sys in Windows 11/10

To increase or reduce the size of Hibernate (hiberfil.sys) file in Windows 11/10, follow these steps:

Open Command Prompt as administrator
Type the following command-
powercfg /hibernate /size <percentage>
Hit Enter.

Let us see the procedure in detail.

From the WinX Menu, open Command Prompt as administrator.

To configure the hibernation file size to 100 percent, use the following command:

powercfg.exe /hibernate /size 100

To configure the hibernation file size to 50 percent, use the following command:

powercfg.exe /hibernate /size 50

In Windows 11/10 now, it is 40% of your RAM. In case you have disabled Hibernation, you will find its size roughly equalling your RAM. In Windows 11/10/8, you will not find the size of Hyberfil.sys running wild when you have Hibernation enabled. In the earlier version of Windows, the hibernation file stored the kernel session, device drivers, and application data. In Windows 11/10/8, the hibernation file stores the kernel session and device drivers only, as a result of which the size remains more or less constant. In Windows 7, your Hiberfil.sys file will be approximately 75% of your RAM.

Windows 11/10 doesn’t allow you to shrink the size of the hiberfil.sys file if the file size is 40% or lesser the size of the installed RAM.

Different Hibernation file types

Hibernation files are used for hybrid sleep, fast startup, and standard hibernation. There are two types, differentiated by size, a full and reduced-size hibernation file.

Hibernation file type	Default size	Supports…
Full	40% of physical memory	hibernate, hybrid sleep, fast startup
Reduced	20% of physical memory	fast startup

To verify or change the type of hibernation file used, run the powercfg.exe utility. The following examples demonstrate how. For more information, run powercfg /? hibernate.

Example	Description
`powercfg /a`	Verify the hibernation file type. When a full hibernation file is used, the results state that hibernation is an available option. When a reduced hibernation file is used, the results say hibernation is not supported. If the system has no hibernation file at all, the results say hibernation hasn’t been enabled.
`powercfg /h /type full`	Change the hibernation file type to full. This isn’t recommended on systems with less than 32GB of storage.
`powercfg /h /type reduced`	Change the hibernation file type to reduced. If the command returns "the parameter is incorrect,” see the following example.
`powercfg /h /size 0` `powercfg /h /type reduced`	Retry changing the hibernation file type to reduced. If the hibernation file is set to a custom size greater than 40%, you must first set the size of the file to zero. Then retry the reduced configuration.

Only fast startup can use a reduced hibernation file, says Microsoft.

What happens if you reduce the size of hiberfil.sys file indiscriminately?

If the Hibernate file size is too small, Windows may throw a Stop Error.

If Windows fails to hibernate because the hibernation file is too small, a Blue Screen can occur with the following Stop Error code and message:

STOP 0x000000A0 INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR

The parameters provide the following information:

Parameter 1 is always equal to 0x0000000B.
Parameter 2 is equal to the size of the hibernation file in bytes.
Parameter 3 is equal to the number of bytes of data that remain to compress and write to the hibernation file.
Parameter 4 is unused for this error.

Resetting an Amazon Echo varies depending on the type of device it is – and that’s even true for the different generations of the same model.

If you’re working from a different generation of Echo devices, the rebooting process is going to be different. That’s the case for the two kinds of Echo Plus models. Also, know that you won’t lose your smart home device connections, if you do decide to reset.

To reset your first-generation Echo Plus, use a paper clip (or something similar) to press the Reset button once and quickly release. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.
To reset your second-generation Echo Plus, press and hold the Action button for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.

How to reset Amazon Echo Show, Amazon Echo Show 5, Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10, Echo Show 15 or Echo Spot (all generations)

If you have an Echo speaker with a screen, whether you have an Echo Spot, one of the two generations of the Echo Show, the Echo Show 5 or 8, things change slightly.

If you have a second-generation Echo Show, you can, of course, use the built-in Zigbee chip to connect to your external smart home devices – and how you reset affects those connections.

To reset your second-generation Echo Show without losing your smart home device connections, say, "Alexa, go to settings,” or swipe down from the top of the screen and select ‘Settings’. From there, select ‘Device Options’, and then ‘Reset to Factory Defaults’, but retain ‘Smart Home Device Connections’. Follow the same steps for the Echo Show 5, Show 8 or Show 10.
To reset your first-generation Echo Show or Echo Spot to its factory settings, say, "Alexa, go to settings,” or swipe down from the top of the screen and select ‘Settings’. Then, select ‘Device Options’, and then ‘Reset to Factory Defaults’. This erases all your personal information and settings on the device.
You can also use the following method to reset your Echo Show: Press and hold the mute and volume down buttons for 15 seconds until the Amazon logo flashes on the display (you may even notice it says "Factory reset mode” in the bottom corner too).

How to reset Amazon Echo Sub

Given the Echo Sub requires some extra setup to get right, and it’ll need to sync with your Echo, Echo Plus or Echo, there’s a chance you’ll need to reset the Sub every now and again.

To reset the Echo Sub, press and hold the Action button located just above the power cord for 25 seconds

Programming a Temporary Garage Code PIN

There are two options for setting the temporary PIN.

Number of uses the temporary PIN works for (e.g. temporary PIN works 36 times, then expires)

The temporary PIN number will not open the door once it expires, however, it can still be used to close the door.

You must have a Security+ or Security+ 2.0 garage door opener to be able to set a temporary PIN. Temporary PINs cannot be set when using an external receiver or on a green learn button opener.

Mystery print queue seen by apps not windows

I had a printer queue on my windows 10 box that all the apps would see but I couldn't delete it via windows print manager. It would not show up. I found this article on how to remove it by getting rid of an old print job stuck in the spooler.

Step 3. Scroll down to find and double-click Print Spooler.

Carbonite backup file types

I had a problem with Carbonite excluding certain file types (.iso, .exe, ...) so my backup wasn't complete. Now they tell you they exclude them and I wasn't sure how to get them added. I found information from this newsletter prepared by Practical Computer Advice

To include a file in your Carbonite backup, and also include all other files of that same type:

Right-click on the excluded file.
In the menu that appears, click "Properties."
In the "Properties" window that appears, click the "Carbonite" tab.
Click to turn on the "Back up" checkbox to back up this file.
Click to turn on the "Back up files of this type (within folders selected for backup)" checkbox if you also want to back up all other files of this same type in other folders.

If there is no "Carbonite" tab in the Properties window, then that file is in an excluded folder.

Notice that in order to tell Carbonite to include all files of a given normally-excluded file type, you have to first find (or create) a file of that type.

If you use a program that stores its data in an unusual folder, i.e., one that is not inside one of the regular user folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, etc.), be sure to include that folder in your review process.

My account name got hosed somehow for my NCL account. A random nonsensical middle name was added 'Nann'. I emailed guest services and heard nothing back. I called main number 866-234-7350 and asked for existing reservation and they said they could not change it and not to worry about it unless NCL book the flight. Otherwise it is $150 to do a name change. So I found another number from Contact Us (ncl.com) and scrolled down to technical support and called 305.468.2200. They quickly understood and found that under my name had nearly a dozen accounts and needed to merge them and remove the middle name. Took about 5 minutes. Excellent job by NCL. The multiple accounts get created by sloppy lazy Travel consultants (ncl and 3rd party) that don't use your latitudes number to look up your name and they just randomly create another account.

Manage Keepass DropDown Lists

Keepass had some entries in the drop down lists (ie username) that I could not figure out how to eliminate. In normal dropdown lists, you hover over them and hit delete.

I found a thread explaining that Keepass auto generates and you need to remove those bad entries from actual saved items.

I ran into an issue with an integration with quicken and one of my accounts. I forgot to document the reason for my issue, but it included a closed account and duplicated transactions occurring in the replaced account every time I would sync.

Note that there is no way to re-open a closed account (Is there any way to make a closed account open again. Really need to correct my error. AL — Quicken)

I was able to move transaction between the accounts but when the sync occurred, I got duplicates.

If you are moving transactions within the same data file

Click on Tools on the top menu bar, then select Account List.
Double-click the account from which you want to move the transaction, to open its register.
Click the transaction to select it, click the Edit gear icon in the transaction (on the right side of the entry), and then choose Move Transaction(s). If you need to select multiple transactions, hold the Shift key as you select them.

Choose the Move to account from the drop-down menu.
Click OK.

So once I got the data straight, I needed to get my quicken cloud to reset completely and reload based on my quicken on my pc.
